After years leading the infamous James gang on bank and train robbing sprees, Jesse James settled down with his wife in St. Joseph, Missouri under an assumed name for what he hoped would be a quiet, anonymous and respectable retirement. Having successfully evaded the law during his wild days, the outlaw's luck ran out and he died with his boots on this day in 1882. His assailant? Family friend Bob Ford who, hoping to make a name for himself, picked up the .45 that Jesse had just given him as a gift and plugged him in the back as he straightened a picture on the wall of the family parlor. Rather than being respected for the deed, Ford was reviled. When you're in the crook business, you can't turn your back on your friends.
