First Day of Summer

The summer solstice -- the official first day of summer in the northern hemisphere, even though for most of us Memorial Day might count as that -- marks the point when the sun is at its northernmost position in the sky, and we have our longest day and shortest night. On this day -- usually between June 20th and 22nd -- the sun is directly over the Tropic of Cancer, which runs through the center of Mexico and just north of Cuba at latitude 20°27' north.

In the southern hemisphere, this is the first day of winter.
