First Steamship Crosses Atlantic
With its arrival in Liverpool, England on this date in 1819, the American steamship Savannah became the first steam-powered vessel to attempt — as well as complete — the Atlantic crossing. The Savannah had departed Savannah, Georgia on May 22nd.
