Modern Department of Defense Formed
On this date in 1949, the current Department of Defense was created from the sloppily-named National Military Establishment — itself created from the former War Department by the National Security Act of 1947 — with James G. Forrestal its first Secretary. Forrestal had been Secretary of the Navy, a separate executive position within the government from 1798 until the 1947 reorganization, which joined it with the other services.
