Easter Sunday — He is risen!

Easter Sunday, of course, commemorates the resurrection of Jesus Christ on the third day after His crucifixion on Good Friday. It is the holiest day and event on the Christian calendar since, in Christ's death and resurrection, lie the entire meaning of Christianity. It is celebrated on the first Sunday, following the first full moon, following the vernal equinox (first day of spring).

Having risen, Christ occasionally appeared to His disciples and instructed them on the spreading of the Word, urging them to first await the coming upon them of the Holy Spirit. Forty days after the Resurrection, on Ascension Day, Christ rose to Heaven, and "sitteth on the right hand of the Father".

In this century, Easter has become devoted, like Christmas, to its commercial aspects ... the "Easter bunny" and the gifts of candy that attend it. While not disparaging a little fun for the kids, especially as it focuses them on this as a special day, it strikes us as discomfiting to read -- as we did in one comic strip -- that "since not everyone believes in the same religion, we also have non-religious ways to celebrate Easter".

An unfortunate contradiction in terms. There is only one meaning to Easter. The rest, innocent as it may be, is a distraction.
