"Seward's Folly" -- Alaska Purchased
On this date in 1867, Secretary of State William H. Seward and Russian Minister to the U.S. Baron de Stoeckl agreed to the purchase by the U.S. of the territory known as Alaska, for a sum of $7.2 million, or 2¢ an acre. The sheer emptiness and remoteness of the region prompted editorialists in the United States to label the deal "Seward's Folly". We now know differently. (Stay tuned for a write-up on this event.
