Texas Independence Day

On this date in 1836 -- coincidental with the birthday of Texas patriot Sam Houston on the same day, and in the midst of the siege of the Alamo -- a convention of American Texans met at Washington-on-the-Brazos and declared independence from Mexico.

With the defeat of Mexican General Santa Anna at San Jacinto the next month, Texas independence became reality. In September, Sam Houston became its first elected president.

The independent Republic of Texas lasted for over nine years, until it joined the Union in 1845.
