History's Happenings for September 5

First Continental Congress Convenes
1774

The First Continental Congress convened on September 5, 1774, in order to consider the next step in trying to resolve grievances with the British Crown. The results of their work was a document sometimes entitled the "Declaration of the First Continental Congress", issued in October.

This petition for redress of grievances -- specifically thirteen named complaints -- was sent to London, whereupon it was rejected by Parliament, and the Colonies declared to be in rebellion.

Sam Houston Elected President Of Texas
1836

Few American statesmen have had such full careers as Sam Houston.

Born in 1793 in Virginia, he ran away as a teenager to live with the Cherokee in eastern Tennessee. He served in the War of 1812, gaining a commission, and afterward entered law practice in Nashville.

In 1823 he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, and served four years, whereupon he was elected governor of Tennessee. He shortly resigned the governorship to return to life among the Cherokee, whom he represented in Washington for many years.

Travelling to Texas in 1832 with instructions from President Andrew Jackson to negotiate peace on behalf of American traders with the Indians in that Mexican province, he was appointed leader of the Texan army when war with Mexico broke out in 1835. Following the heroic battle of the Alamo in March of 1836, Houston led the Texan army to victory at San Jacinto, winning Texas her independence in the process.

He was promptly elected President of the new Texan nation, on this day in 1836. He served for two years and was re-elected in 1841. Texas became a state in 1845, whereupon Houston became one of its first U.S. Senators. He served in this capacity until elected governor of Texas in 1859.

He was removed from office in 1861 for refusing to swear allegiance to the Confederacy. He died in 1863.
