Occupation Of Japan Begins
Three days after the first American troops landed on the soil of their former enemy, Allied Occupation Forces under the command of General of the Army Douglas MacArthur arrived in Japan on this date in 1945. The Occupation began two weeks after VJ Day, but three days before the official surrender ceremony. It continued until 1952, when the official peace treaty, negotiated in that year, went into effect. The Occupation, and MacArthur's social and industrial policies, are generally credited with laying the groundwork for the industrial powerhouse into which Japan evolved.
